Audition Hint #1: Monologues are Storytelling
Remember when you sat on someone’s knee and waited with anticipation to hear a story? When you go on your next audition, remember that a monologue is just an opportunity to bring a story to life. If you think of the director and casting director as a little child who is anxious to be entertained, you won’t feel as intimidated and you will be very close to the truth.
Imagine a director or casting director who may be sitting for hours watching one monologue after the other in a dark theater. Each time an actor steps on stage to perform a monologue what is going through their mind? Are they thinking, “Gee, I hope this person is really boring, awful, and uninteresting”? No way! When they are waiting to hear your monologue they are thinking, “I hope this person pulls me into an interesting situation, a funny experience, a wacky character, or an exciting story”.
So, remember, the director wants you to succeed every time. There are no exceptions! And, you have the opportunity to bring a story to life every time you step on stage to perform a monologue!
